TEN COMMANDMENTS HIKE
(“Arise, walk through the land in the length of it and in the breadth of it.” Genesis 13:17)
NOVEMBER 23, 2012
Make plans to attend the upcoming Ten Commandments Hike sponsored by the Southeast Louisiana Council and taking place on the uptown streets of New Orleans. This interfaith hike has ten stops along its route at various houses of worship where one of the Ten Commandments is revealed to the hikers. Check in for participants starts at St. John the Baptist (Catholic) Church on Oretha Castle Haley Boulevard. (Park underneath the Pontchartrain Expressway. NOPD will patrol the area.) The hike will begin promptly at 10:00 a.m. Other stops will include representatives of the Lutheran, Jewish, United Methodist, Latter-Day Saints, Presbyterian, Islamic and Episcopal faiths. Participants will receive a special event patch, a commemorative water bottle, a streetcar token, plenty of Kentwood water, and will be fed a hot lunch at the Jewish Community Center midway through the first part of the hike. The route for younger Cub Scout-age participants is four miles mostly along historic St. Charles and Carrollton Avenues and will end at Holy Name of Jesus, where participants will board streetcars to return to the starting point. Older participants will continue for another one and a half miles along St. Charles Avenue. Streetcars will also provide a means to return to the starting point. The hike is intended to foster understanding of different faiths, breed religious tolerance, and promote the 12th Point of the Scout Law (“A Scout is Reverent.”) while also encouraging physical fitness. The hike is open to all Cub Scouts, Boy Scouts, Venturers, Girl Scouts, Scouters, parents, siblings, and friends. Registration, parental consent, and health forms are required to be filled out in advance at Council Services or can be faxed to the office at (504) 889-1162. This is a very popular event and space is limited, so register by mail or in person at Council Services A.S.A.P. Or, register online below.
The registration fee is $10.00 per person UNTIL October 31. Registration goes up to $12.00 after that date. Send your registration and consent/ health forms in as soon as possible. These forms MUST be received at the Council Services office prior to the hike.
