Pelican DistrictFriends of Scouting

Scout famiies make up the majority of our annual Friends of Scouting (FOS) campaign. Every year, their generosity supports the Boy Scouts of America, Southeast Louisiana Council with more than $55,000 in donations. Why do our families give to our FOS campaign even after paying membership and activity fees? The reason is because they believe in the value of Scouting on their families today, and on the impact the program will provide to their child and community in the future. As Scouting's founder Robert Baden Powell said, "We never fail when we try to do our duty, we always fail when we neglect to do it."

An investment in Scouting is one of the best investments you can make. For more than 100 years, the Boy Scouts of America have provided a proven, character-building program to youth. We must instill America’s next generation of leaders with integrity, intellectual curiosity and strong values. Youth enrolled in the Boy Scouts in any level earn better grades, read at a higher level, are in better shape, and will earn more over their lifetime than youth on average. With the aid of over 1,100 adult volunteer leaders in Pelican District, we truly are preparing our youth for life.

Your generosity makes a difference by providing:

  • Scholarships for youth to participate and be supplied;
  • Materials to help train volunteers in their roles of developing youth;
  • STEM programming such as robotics, welding and nuclear science;
  • Maintenance of facilities (Council Service Center and our camping property, Camp Salmen Scout Reservation) and staff to provide critical program support for youth and volunteers;
  • And much more.

Every year, over 3,000 boys, young men and young women in participate in Pelican District’s (which consists of St. John, St. Charles and the East Bank of Jefferson Parish) 85+ Cub Scout Packs, Boy Scout Troops, Venture Crews and Explorers Post. These units are located in the Southeast Louisiana Council, which serves 10,000 youth throughout 11 parishes annually.

Annually, local scouts earn more than 1,000 advancements, 1,500 Boy Scout Merit Badges, and 25 Eagle Scout Awards. These youth provide more than 8,500 recorded community service hours. Over 200 youth attende Cub Scout Day Camps, more than 350 youth attended Boy Scout Summer Camps, and thousands participated in our Cub Overnighter Campout, Boy Scout Camporee, Fall Encampment, Cub World, Merit Badge Weekend, Webelos Adventure Camp, Thanksgiving Camp and Winter Camp.This would not be possible without your support.

Thank you for your generosity to keep our legacy of leadership alive!

Yours in Scouting,

Pelican District Staff and Friends of Scouting Team
