The 2018 Council Recognition Banquet will be held on Tuesday, March 13th at the Alario Center again.  More specific information will be available as we get closer to the event.  If you have any questions, please email Nancy Allen.

At the banquet, we will recognize the following:

  • 2017 Class of Eagle Scouts
  • 2017 Class of Silver Beavers
  • 2017 Silver Pelican
  • 2017 Young American(s)

Nominations for the following awards are due January 30, 2018.  Nomination forms can be brought to the council service center in a sealed envelope marked with the name of the award, emailed to sela@bsamail.org or faxed to 504-889-1162.  The nomination forms for these awards, along with a description of each award is below:

The Young American Award Nomination Form

Background
First presented in 1968, the award is given to a student age 19 through 25 to highlight publicly the importance of their excellent achievements and service to their community, state and nation. The local council office typically extends the application process in September to appropriate council units and community youth-serving organizations, which then submit nominations on behalf of their young adult constituents. Nominees may or may not be participants in Learning for Life or members of the BSA.

Student Qualifications

  • Age Requirement—19 through 25 whenstudent applies for the award.
  • Accomplishments—have achievedoutstanding accomplishments in the fields ofart, athletics, business, community service,education, government, humanities,literature, math, music, religion, and science.
  • Service—have been involved in service intheir community, state, or country that addsto the quality of life.
  • Scholars—have maintained an above-average scholastic grade point average.College freshmen provide high schooltranscript. College sophomores to graduatestudent provide college transcript.
  • Recommendations—provide with theapplication three to six letters ofrecommendation from your troop, post,crew, group, school, teacher, counselor,employer, minister, business leader, civicleader, or other community leaders.

Silver Beaver Award Nomination Form

The Silver Beaver Award was introduced in 1931 and is a council?level distinguished service award of the Boy Scouts of America. Recipients of this award are registered adult Scouters who have made an impact on the lives of youth through service given to the council. Candidates should not be notified of their nomination as only a limited number are selected each year.

THE PURPOSE OF THE AWARD
“Awarded since 1929, the Silver Pelican Award is presented annually by the Times Picayune to the Boy Scout who, in the opinion of the Southeast Louisiana Council, has contributed most to the advancement of Scouting (Boy Scouting and/or Cub Scouting) in the Southeast Louisiana Council…”

WHILE ALL NOMINATIONS ARE ACCEPTED FOR SCOUTS WHO MEET THE CRITERIA, BEING UNDER THE AGE OF 18 AT THE TIME OF SELECTION, IT IS HIGHLY DISCOURAGED FOR PARENTS TO NOMINATE THEIR SONS FOR THIS AWARD. NOMINATIONS ARE OFTEN TIMES BEST RECEIVED, AND COMPLETE A CLEARER PICTURE, IF THE NOMINATOR IS AN INDIVIDUAL WHO HAS WORKED WITH THE APPLICANT ON NUMEROUS OCCASIONS IN SCOUTING. THESE PEOPLE OFTEN TIMES KNOW THE YOUNG MAN’S TRUE CHARACTER WHEN NO ONE IS WATCHING…
