The Council recently received notification that Salmen Scout Reservation received American Tree Farm System (ATFS) certification. For over 75 years, ATFS, a program of the American Forest Foundation, has enhanced the quality of America’s woodlands by giving forest owners the tools needed to keep forests healthy and productive. The certification allows the Council to join a network of 74,000 forest owners sustainably managing 19 million acres of forestland. ATFS is the largest and oldest sustainable woodland system in the United States, internationally recognized, meeting strict third-party certification standards.
Through generous donations from the Mississippi Forestry Association and Mitchell Forestry & Wildlife Services, LLC, the Council performed extensive mapping of Salmen Scout Reservation and submitted the documents necessary to obtain this third-party certification. As a result, the Council will now have access to a multitude of resources to manage the forests at Salmen Scout Reservation in a sustainable, responsible manner and also be able to represent to potential buyers of timber from the camp of the Council’s commitment to properly managing its forests.
